Straight Talk on Glasses

You can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time.

Purchasing new glasses can be both an exciting time and a stressful time. To the outside world your glasses are front and centre and help define you. New glasses are a new you. Who can't wait to show off their new glasses? But glasses are also functional. What will give you the best vision? What is best for your eyes? Are you damaging your eyes by picking X over Y? Do you really need all those extras? And do glasses really need to cost so much?

The optical business has always been a bit difficult to decipher, starting even with the title of the person you buy your glasses from: ocularist, optician, optometrist, ophthalmologist, orthoptist? Technology and the internet have brought more choice to you the consumer and even more questions. Lenses used to be ground by hand by highly skilled craftsmen. Now the same work is done in a few minutes by a computer. Yet prices have never been higher. There are some great places to buy glasses where people genuinely care about you. And if you listen to Sixty Minutes and CBC's MarketPlace there are also some pretty shady goings on. How do you as a consumer know?

The aim of these pages is to bring some transparency and clarity to the issue and to provide you with the knowledge so you can make the decision which is right for you.

First clear away the fog and get the facts by looking at optical illusions. Dealing with good people can make all the difference. We are blessed to be frequently complimented with phrases such as "I've seen a lot of eye doctors in my life time and you're one of the best." Wouldn't it be nice to feel that way about the person you're buying your glasses from? You can. See my favourite people. Your fellow consumers are buying thousands of pairs a year. Where are their favourite places? And finally considering your needs and desires will also point you in certain directions.
